Parts of tombstone columns from the old Jewish Cemetery

1 Minute Read

Following the discovery of parts of tombstone columns from the old Jewish Cemetery during the works carried out at the back side of the Church of Panagia Achiropiitos, the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki is in constant communication with the competent services of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki. Their collection and transfer to the Jewish Cemetery in the Municipality of Pavlou Mela will take place within the next few days.
We note that the old Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki, one of the oldest in Europe, was destroyed in 1942 by the Nazis and their collaborators, supplying marble and bricks – as building materials for every kind of building constructed in Thessaloniki or its wider region.
