Activities of the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki 2010-2011

Exhibitions

In November 2010, the permanent photographic exhibition “Jewish Communities in Northern Greece” was created on the upper floor of the Sephiha wing, which presents a concise panorama of the public and private life, locations and architectural presence of Jews in the cities around the Egnatia Odos, a presence that lasted for over 2,000 years.

Since January 2011, the following temporary exhibitions have been presented:

Photographic exhibition "Sylvia"

  • includes photographs of concentration camps created by Victor Cohen in search of family memories. The visual artist Victor Cohen (b. 1968), a descendant of Jews from Thessaloniki who survived death camps, is based in New York and is widely known for his creative work.

Photo exhibition "Michmach"

  • in collaboration with the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography presented the exhibition of the internationally renowned Belgian photographer Christian Karez.

Photographic exhibition "Greek Jewish athletes"

  • an exhibition based on the research material of the work of Dr Nikos Zaikos, Assistant Professor of International Law, on the sporting performance of the Jews of Thessaloniki during the last century.

Speech events

  • a series of lectures on the cemeteries of Thessaloniki, from antiquity to the present day, in which expert researchers spoke, presenting even more anecdotal material.
  • Speech on “Photography and Holocaust memory”, on the photographic search for memory
    presentations of new university papers on the education of the Jews of Thessaloniki after 1912 on the one hand, and on the settlement of the Jews of the city in the 19th and 20th centuries on the other
    presentation of the work of Angela Arbelaez on the identification, preservation, collection and promotion of elements of the Spanish-Jewish tradition of Thessaloniki.

Inauguration of the "Andreas Sefiha" wing

These activities were made possible thanks to the opening of the new wing of the museum, dedicated to the memory of Andreas Sefichas. The official inauguration of the wing took place on 16 February 2011.
